Among the memories of Ivan Mazepa in the collection of Ukrainian antiquities of the famous philanthropist Vasyl Tarnovskyi, hetman's torban - a string plucked musical instrument - was kept, that had from 30 to 40 strings.
It was described and illustrated among the objects of the Cossack era in the "Catalogue of Ukrainian antiquities of the collection of V.V. Both Petrieries could do for the Genoese shopping gallery (Kyiv, 1898 рік) under the number 506 «Pandora (from the pipe) Hetman Ioann Mazepa. rosewood, trimmed with ivory. On the handle is the hetman's coat of arms made of inlaid ivory».
After, as the benefactor's collection was transported to Chernihiv, where in 1902 Dr.. Vasyl Tarnovsky Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities was opened, the musical instrument was displayed in the museum exhibit.
On preserved illustrations and postcards we can see, that the bandura no longer had strings, the resonator hole was in the form of a star, the fretboard contained an image of the hetman's coat of arms and a museum tag was affixed, several pinnae are absent.
Today, the location of the torban of Hetman I. Mazepy remains unknown.
