У січні 2023 year passes 185 years from time, when the first Chernihiv newspaper was published. She came out continuously 80 years and in her columns depicted the society of that time in all its diversity. On the pages of the newspaper and contemporaries will be able to find interesting facts about our ancient city and the people who lived in it. And the importance of the newspaper for historians is difficult to overestimate, because it is a unique source for a comprehensive study of the history of the city and Chernihiv region in general.

"Chernihiv provincial information" (Russian. doref. Chernihiv provincial bulletin) - the official government newspaper, which was published in the provincial center during 1838 – 1918 рр. The first issue was released on Saturday, 8 January 1838 р.(за старим стилем). The newspaper was first published once a week, від 1865 Dr.. - twice, від 1866 Dr.. - three times per week, with 1894 Dr.. - became daily. "Chernihivskie gubernskie vedomosti" ceased to exist in 1918 р., and the last few issues were published in Ukrainian.

The newspaper consisted of two parts: official, where orders were printed, resolutions and notifications of central and local authorities and unofficial, which included local news reports, articles on folklore, Ethnography, archeology, stories, geography, економіки, descriptions of agriculture, trade etc. The head of the newspaper desk of the Chernihiv provincial board was responsible for the publication of the newspaper, he also held the position of editor of the official part. The editors of the unofficial part of the newspaper at different times of its existence were well-known public and cultural figures of Chernihiv: Petro Linevych, Oleksandr Shishatskyi-Illich, Mykola Bilozerskyi, Oleksiy Shramchenko, Ivan Konoval. To the team, who published the newspaper included a proofreader and a censor. The newspaper was printed on the basis of the provincial printing house. Very young (20 elderly) Historian and local historian Count Hryhoriy Myloradovych began his long-term cooperation with the newspaper. For the first time, he published interesting documents and materials on the history of ancient Lubech in the newspaper's columns, including the unique attraction "Lyubetsky Synod", and Mykola Bilozerskyi published for the first time a text with comments on "Chernihiv Chronicle" and "Bobolinsky Chronicle". The career of a well-known historian of Ukraine-Hetman Oblast also began with cooperation with ChGV, and then still a young 19-year-old student Oleksandr Lazarevskii. In the unofficial part of the newspaper 1853 Dr.. he published the first index in the history of local bibliography "Experience of an index of sources for the study of the Malorossiysk region in historical and geographical terms". In general, the index describes 154 names of sources from the history of Ukraine. Definitely, that interest in this kind of painstaking work on identifying and describing literature, captured by O. Lazarev, and he soon announced to the readers his intentions in the future to make annual reviews of books on the history of Left Bank Ukraine. So for the next three years (1856– 1858) led a special bibliographic section on the pages of ChGV entitled "Ukrainian literary chronicle".

Many fables and lyrical poems by Leonid Hlibov first saw the light of day on the pages of the provincial newspaper, poems by Mykola Verbytskyi and Anatoly Svidnytskyi, works of Ukrainian writers Panteleimon Kulish and Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi. A unique collection was published by Oleksandr Shishatskyi (one and a half thousand) proverbs and sayings with comments, explanations and appendices of folk songs and stories. According to O. Lazarev, it was at that time the best and most complete collection of small genres of Ukrainian folklore.

The most complete is the collection of newspaper copies (1839-1918 years.), which is stored in the funds of the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after. In. Tarnovsky. In the funds of the National Library of Ukraine named after. In. Vernadskyi's newspaper binders are scattered and partially kept in the collection of O. Lazarev (binder "Added" for 1839-1862 years.) and the department of newspaper funds. Also, copies of "ChHV" can be read in the Chernihiv Regional Scientific Library (1877-1912 years.) and the State Archive of Chernihiv Region (1843-1890 years.)
