Life is devoted to science

10 April 2024 year in the Chernihiv regional historical museum named after. A museum meeting was held by V. V. Tarnovsky, dedicated to the memory of Volodymyr Petrovych Kovalenko, which should be fulfilled on this day 70 years. More than fifty of his friends gathered for the event, colleagues, students and acquaintances. Many of them shared their memories of Volodymyr Petrovych, about his work, projects and discoveries.

Volodymyr Petrovych Kovalenko was born 10 April 1954 year in the town of Semenivka, Chernihiv region. On 1962 year and lived in Chernihiv until the last days. He was interested in history and archeology since his school years, in 1969 participated in archaeological research for the first time. He graduated from the historical faculty of the Chernihiv State Pedagogical Institute named after. Т.Г.Шевченка, where he later worked as a teacher, associate professor and head of the department. But his first place of work was the Chernihiv Historical Museum. It was here that he worked with 2015 year to his last day. He passed away 23 October 2016 year old 62 years. Over the years of his professional activity, Volodymyr Petrovych led dozens of archaeological expeditions in his native Chernihiv Oblast, conducted research in Novgorod-Siverskyi, Liubech, Чернігові, Shestovytsi, Baturini and other places. He was a consultant for large-scale reconstructions of the Baturin citadel, started the International Summer Field School for Young Archaeologists, International student scientific archaeological conference. V. Kovalenko was the author of over 500 наукових праць, had many awards, including the Order of Merit III degree and the award of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Already posthumously, according to the museum, awarded the title of "Honorary Citizen of the City of Chernihiv" for special merits in the field of studying the history of the city.

Volodymyr Kovalenko was well known as an archaeologist in Chernihiv and beyond, scientist, історика, teacher and popularizer of the history of Chernihiv region. He was very bright, charismatic, intelligent, interesting, an open and cheerful person, and that is exactly how he remains in the memories of those, who knew him during his life.
