Last trip to Chernihiv

Do 1899 Dr.. the newspaper "Chernihiv Gubernskie Vedomosti", that 24 Vasyl Tarnovskyi, a well-known philanthropist, came to Chernihiv in January. He arrived in the city by rail from Kyiv (train with a transfer in Kruty). Vasyl Vasyliovych stayed in the famous Chernihiv hotel "Olexandrivska" (on the corner of Shoseynaya and Bulvarnaya Streets), which was near Val and the place, which was the main purpose of the patron's trip [1]. The short trip took place four months before the benefactor's death. V. Tarnovskyi, worried about the fate of his collection of Ukrainian history and culture, decided to personally settle urgent matters.

The details of Vasyl Tarnovsky's visit are revealed by an entry in the diary of the well-known public figure Oleksandr Rusov from 24 January 1899 Dr.. So, it talks about that, that in the morning Oleksandr Oleksandrovych met V. Tarnovskyi at the railway station. The latter brought with him a catalog of his collection (about 3 thousand. items), that saw the world in 1898 Dr.. (printing house of K. Milevskyi in Kyiv). The catalog was shown to deputies of the Chernihiv provincial zemstvo assembly, which were to decide the fate of the patron's collection. Vasyl Vasyliovych negotiated the transfer of his property to the Chernihiv Zemstvo Assembly. Вочевидь, that the negotiations went more or less successfully, because V. Tarnovsky left the city 28 January 1899 Dr.. The weather was freezing these days, sometimes the sun came through. In his free time, Vasyl Vasyliovych could walk and admire the views of the old city.

Already 2 February 1899 р., in the evening, a fateful vote took place in the Chernihiv Zemstvo Assembly - 37 deputies voted for that, to accept the patron's gift (15 votes were cast against). The assembly provided 20 thousand. rub. for the construction of a new building for the museum (refusing to buy "Mazepa's house") [2].

The process of creating the Museum was also a result of V. Tarnovsky's visit to Chernihiv. It started with formation 3 February 1899 Dr.. "Commission for the creation of the Tarnovsky Museum" as part of the Chernihiv Provincial Zemstvo Assembly. Well-known residents of Chernihiv were elected to the commission - deputies of the meeting: Vasyl Khizhnakov (mayor in 1875–1887., head of the provincial zemstvo administration in 1886–1896.), well-known lawyer Ilya Shrag, noble Hryhoriy Hlibov, famous artist Ivan Rashevskyi, Dmytro Trizna, V. Karachevskyi-Volk, A. Gamaliya, M. Kotlyarevskyi, Prince M. Dolgorukov [3].
