Flag of Chernigov: an echo of history

27 March 1623 Chernihiv received Magdeburg law by privilege of King Sigismund III of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and therefore its flag. You can read how he looked here. But why is he not like that now, I will tell you as one of the participants of those events.

26 June 2008 Chernihiv City Council recognized the city contest "Flag of the Territorial Community of. Chernigov" like this, that took place and confirmed the draft of the flag of the territorial community of Chernihiv proposed by the competition committee.

This decision was preceded by the following. 3 October 2006 In 2015, a public discussion of Chernihiv flag projects took place in the hall of the Chernihiv City Council. Employees of the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after. VV. Tarnovsky. Senior researcher of the museum, candidate of historical sciences, member of the Ukrainian Heraldic Society Ihor Sity made a thorough report on the history of the city flag and showed its reconstruction, performed by the author's team - Ihor Sity, artist Lyudmila Posmashna and historian doctor of historical sciences, Professor Serhiy Lepyavko based on Opanas Shafonsky's description.

25 April 2007 2015, by the decision of the Chernihiv City Council, the competition "Flag of the Territorial Community of. Chernihiv", which was to last from 1 May to 1 September 2007 year, its regulations and the composition of the tender committee headed by the secretary of the city council Vitaly Golts were approved (head) and Oleg Vasyuta, head of the city council's culture department (Deputy Chairman). The competition committee gathered for its first meeting 23 January 2008 year. Competitive works were considered, and, after several stages of selection, two projects are defined: the author's team (And. Ситий, Л. Posmashna, С. Sticky) and Boris Dedov. Since none of them got the required number of votes, decided to send both projects for consideration by the Awards and Heraldry Service of the Secretariat of the President of Ukraine. The Department of Culture of the City Council had to prepare a corresponding submission signed by the mayor.

15 May 2008 year, the competition committee met again for its meeting, at which O. Vasyuta announced, that the Commission of State Awards and Heraldry under the President of Ukraine 2 April 2008 year, with comments, agreed to the option, proposed by B. Dedov. The committee finalized the flag and approved the result of the competition.

Subsequently, I turned to a member of the Commission, candidate of historical sciences, head of the Ukrainian Heraldic Society Andriy Hrechyla for clarification, why this particular option was chosen. Mr. Andriy answered, that the Commission considered one проект, since he was sent to her only one проект.

That is, disregarding the decision of the competition committee, the city council lobbied for option B. Dedova.

Like this, instead of the historical flag, Chernihiv received that flag, which is today.

I will not say, that he is bad, but Chernihiv, I think, it deserves to have a historical flag as well.
