Do 1887 Dmytro Yavornytsky visited Kachanivka in. Examining the collection of Ukrainian antiquities, he drew attention to the lack of "that good, which remained in various places of the former Zaporozhye ". He suggested to Vasyl Tarnovsky “to go to the rapids of the Dnieper, to visit places, where were the Zaporozhian Sich, look into the old Zaporozhian churches, in manorial or burgher houses, or in some over empty peasant houses, built on the old Zaporozhian settlements. Vasyl Vasyliovych was immediately fascinated by it. ".
VV. Tarnowski took on all the financial issues of the trip. Despite the quarrel, which from time to time arose between him and DI. Yavornytsky, which he described very carefully in his essay "VV. Tarnowski », the philanthropist provided financial assistance in the amount of 1000 rubles to the historian for the press of his first big monograph "Zaporozhye in the remnants of antiquity and legends of the people". This was a third of the total cost of the publication. In the preface, the author thanked Tarnowski (however, he deleted this part of the preface!): “A publication with so many illustrations entailed a lot of expenses, and if it appeared in a little more, than usual, then the author owes this to the enlightened assistance of the famous South Russian collector of antiquities, Vasily Vasilievich Tarnovsky, to whom he brings his most lively and sincere gratitude. " Besides, VV. Tarnowski helped resolve the issue of lifting the arrest, superimposed on the book, that was already in the printing house.
From the trip Vasyl Tarnovsky brought replenishment of his collection. Among the Zaporozhian antiquities were household items, collected in the Great Meadow, which are still preserved in the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after V.V. Tarnovsky:
"Oh, an owl sat on the grave, gay as a whip tai whip!
Oh, return to the Cossacks, to the Great Meadow!
Oh, who had to return faster,
then those in the meadow wintered!
And where those who did not care cared, then they died in the steppe ".
