Ukraine through the eyes of Dominique De la Flies

In the collection of the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after. Three unique ones of V.V. Tarnovsky are preserved, manuscripts of Dominique Pierre De la Flies album, dating from the middle of the 19th century.

The author of the albums, Dominique Pierre De la Flies, is a Ukrainian ethnographer of French origin, surgeon. He was born in the city of Nancy (Франція) in the family of a doctor. He received his education in France at the Royal Medical College. In the rank of captain, he served in the 2nd grenadier regiment of the Great Army of Emperor Napoleon, was an assistant to the chief surgeon of the French army and the Imperial Guard, Dominique Larray. During the campaign 1812 was wounded and captured. Lived in Ukraine. He married Sofya Markevich.

In 1831–1838, he headed the hospital of Countess Oleksandra Branytska in Bila Tserkva. During the cholera epidemic only in Bila Tserkva with over 300 saved the lives of patients 247 persons. Do 1845 In 2006, he started research on the "medical geography" of the Kyiv province.

During travels in the villages and towns of the territory of modern Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Cherkasy regions collected and summarized considerable factual material, on the basis of which he compiled a comprehensive description of the life of the Ukrainian population. This knowledge was reflected in 9 albums, three of which (the earliest) for 1848–1849. are stored in the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after. В.В.Тарновського.
