Чернігівський історичний музей ім. VV. Tarnowski has come a long way from creating separate museums in a small provincial town to merging them into one powerful scientific institution, which today is the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after VV. Tarnovsky, that 26 November 2021 year noted 125 years since its inception. It was on this path:
and official opening 14 (26 for a new style) November 1896 Dr.. the first public museum in Chernihiv, which became the Museum of the Chernihiv Provincial Scientific Archival Commission at the corner of Boulevard (now Transfiguration) and Hound streets;
and opening to visitors in April 1902 Dr.. on the outskirts, and in fact out of town, the only museum in the Russian Empire Ukrainian antiquities, which arose thanks to the generous gift of Ukrainian public and cultural figure VV. Tarnovsky, who collected a unique collection of Ukrainian antiquities and bequeathed it to Chernihiv, and the courage of the deputies of the provincial zemstvo to accept this gift;
and holding in August 1908 Dr.. in Chernihiv XIV Archaeological Congress, which significantly changed the museum landscape of Chernihiv. Preparations for the congress stimulated the creation of a church-historical museum - the Diocesan Vault of Antiquities (tree storage), for which a room was allocated at the Chernihiv Theological Seminary, and exhibits, that were collected for the congress and left by their owners - the organizers of the forum, joined the Museum of the Archival Commission, which became known as the Chernihiv United City Museum and the Scientific Archival Commission, in memory of the 1000th anniversary of the chronicle of. Chernihiv;
and the turbulent 1919s and early 1920s, when, despite everything, Chernihiv museums survived, preserved, to, more: in July 1919 Dr.. the Museum of Landlord Life and Arts was opened in the Miloradovichs' house, and 1 May 1923 Dr.. - Ethnographic Museum, or the Museum of Peasant Life, which was opened in Gortynsky's house, on the ground floor of which is the Museum of Cults (former Diocesan Ancient Warehouse);
and merging into 1923 Dr.. de jure five museums to the Chernihiv State Museum, and providing in 1925 Dr.. museum premises of the former Noble and Peasant Bank (currently the building is occupied by the Chernihiv Regional Universal Scientific Library. V.G. Korolenka), where all its museum-departments united de facto and 26 March 1926 Dr.. opened the first exhibitions, and the name of V.V.. Tarnowski disappeared from his name.
The name of the museum has changed since then, its location, collections were lost and multiplied, forms and methods of scientific and educational work were diversified, new departments were created, which later became partly separate institutions, or, as the Museum of Folk Decorative Art of Chernihiv Region, lost premises and disappeared from the museum map of Chernihiv; in the 1970s the museum ceased to be state-owned, а у 1991 Dr.. he was given back the name VV. Tarnovsky.
Today Chernihiv Regional Historical Museum. VV. Tarnowski researches and publishes the Chernihiv dimension of the history of Ukraine and its own history, reveals her unknown pages and figures, collects, preserves and promotes the cultural heritage of the people of Ukraine, launches new exhibition and educational projects. About this - the proposed exhibition.
