3D-models of museum exhibits

From June 2023 року у Чернігівському історичному музеї ім. VV. Tarnovsky together with the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with the support of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) there is a project to create 3D models of museum exhibits. It was started with the digitization of encolpion crosses of the time of Kyivan Rus.

The project is designed to preserve information about the museum's archaeological collection, provide an opportunity for archaeologists, historians, scientists from different countries of the world and all those, who is interested in the historical heritage of Ukraine, use these digital models.

The archaeological part of Vasyl Tarnovsky's collection is stored in the museum, related to the study of the prince's settlement (X - XIII Art.) in Cherkasy region. In literature, this monument is accepted with the historical city of Rodin, which is mentioned in the chronicle under 980 year.

At the end of the XIX century. Vasily Tarnovsky purchased the territory of the settlement and invited for professional study of professional archaeologist Mykola Bilyashivsky. The archaeologist started excavations at this place in 1891 year. Excavations have replenished a collection of antiquities in. Tarnovsky. It also included encolpion crosses. Collection of encolpions collected by V. Tarnovsky was once one of the best and counted 53 items. It contained not only finds from Knyazha Gora. On sorry, the integrity of the collection is violated. During the Second World War, the finds were partially lost.

Today in the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after V. In. Tarnovsky is preserved 21 encolpion. Almost all the crosses in Vasyl Tarnovsky's collection were created by ancient Russian masters, they mostly date back to the 12th–13th centuries. - at the time of the final phase of the existence of the settlement on Knyazha Gora.
