375 years of "Nomocanon" from the printing house of Mikhail Slozka

In the collection of the Chernihiv Historical Museum named after VV. Tarnowski preserved "Nomocanon" (Інв. № AL-363) issued 12 August 1646 in Lviv in the printing house of Mykhailo Slozka.

Collections were called nomocanons, containing church rules (Holy Apostles, Ecumenical and Local Councils, rules of the holy fathers) and state laws, which concerned church matters. In Slavic lists, the name was literally translated - Ruler. Which "Employee" , which was discussed earlier, The Nomocanon was commissioned by Bishop Halytsky, Arseniy Zheliborsky of Lviv and Kamyanets-Podilsky, who was actively engaged in publishing.

The book was intended primarily for clergy. It was in great demand among the clergy, because it contained not only a list of canonical rules of the Church, but practical guidance is also important for pastoral ministry. Archimandrite of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra Zachary Kopystensky called "Nomocanon" "a mentor for clergy and a doctor for those, who repents ».

"Nomocanon" from the printing house of Mykhailo Slozka became the fourth edition of this book in Ukraine and is a reprint of the third edition of the Kyiv-Pechersk printing house 1629 year (The first two editions of the Nomocanon were also published in the Lavra 1620 та 1623 years).

In his speech to the readers, Bishop Arseniy addresses the holders of spiritual dignity, especially paying attention to that, that they should continually learn the Scriptures and the Law of God themselves and instruct their flock day and night in faith. He notices, that the collection of church rules is of great benefit to all the faithful. "The book, which is divinely inspired, could have been listened to by calling the Doctor and the Pharmacy on the mansions of human souls.", Says the bishop, because it indicates the causes of the disease of the soul and, most importantly, offers a cure for the ailment.

The printing of "Nomocanon" is made in two colors. The book is decorated with screensavers, initials and endings, engravings of the monk Elijah. After the title page, the poem "On the ancient jewel of their graces of the lords of Zheliborsky" was published.:

“The pastor is re-elected with high virtues,

Speech and scutkom[1] mean such kleinot:

The tiara and figure of Jesus are crucified,

In addition to the Nomocanon itself, sheets 77-78 contain instructions for the priest., who accepts confession - "Mirror to the clergyman from the Nomocanon of John the Fasting". On pages 79-83 is "Teaching the priest to the newly consecrated", the text is the same as in the edition of this work 1642 year carried out in the Lviv fraternal printing house also by order of Bishop Arseniy.

On sheets 1–4 record: “Year 1687 month of August 6 day this book is the verb Nomokanon of the priest Hierotheus Yaroshinsky non-church, but his hairy bought ".
