Saint Theodosius of Chernihiv

7 September 2021 in Chernihiv Historical Museum named after VV. Tarnowski opened the exhibition dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the canonization of St. Theodosius of Uglich, Archbishop of Chernihiv.

Separate documents, associated with F. Uglitsky, his personal belongings were preserved in the early twentieth century. in the museum of the Chernihiv provincial scientific archival commission and the Bishop's house on the territory of the Trinity-Ilyinsky monastery. Subsequently, from the residence of the Chernihiv bishop they got to the Chernihiv eparchial ancient storehouse. Some of these unique objects are still in the Chernihiv Historical Museum. VV. Feodosii Uglitsky moved to Chernihiv 1688 year, when he took control of the Holy Dormition Elets Monastery. Since then, he has become the closest assistant of the Archbishop of Chernihiv Lazar Baranovich in the management of diocesan affairs.. The latter, understanding the high spiritual qualities of Abbot Theodosius, saw him as his successor at the ancient Chernihiv department..

11 September 1692 year he was ordained archbishop. The saint proved to be a tireless helper of the elderly and weak Archbishop Lazarus., who died 3 September 1693 year. Having accepted the Chernihiv eparchy into independent administration, Saint Theodosius proved to be an experienced, a wise and just spiritual and administrative leader.

Saint Theodosius passed away 5 February 1696 year. He was buried in Borisoglebsk Cathedral, where his relics are 200 years in a damp cave remained incorruptible. Soon after the death of Archbishop Theodosius, he began to be revered as a saint. The most important reason for this were numerous miracles, which took place after the prayer to the saint.

The canonization of St. Theodosius took place 9 September 1896 year. The significance of this event for Chernihiv and Chernihiv province is difficult to overestimate. Preparations for the celebration were carried out at the highest level, the city was preparing to receive guests. Many statesmen and public figures came to Chernihiv for canonization, many clergy and pilgrims. The festivities began 5 September and continued until 10 September. These days Chernihiv residents became participants in a rare and majestic Orthodox celebration.

At the opening of the exhibition, its author, researcher of the museum, Candidate of Theology Myroslav Mai-Boroda told the guests about the presented diplomas, published by St. Theodosius of Uglich, a handwritten letter to a military comrade, Mr. Ivan Zabila, in 1691, his attire is sakos (end of the XVII century.) and exhibits related to the festive celebrations on the occasion of the canonization of the saint, stored in the museum.

Also on the opening day of the exhibition a senior researcher, Candidate of Historical Sciences Ihor Sytyi told about the significance of the symbols on the coat of arms of the Uglichs and the history of the seal of the Chernihiv bishops, and the head of the scientific and educational department Natalia Samokhina told about it, as the city prepared for the celebrations on the occasion of the canonization and reception of numerous guests.
